I think what said in the movie is absolutely right.
After the World War 2, according to the Peace Treaty of San Francisco in 1952, Japan gave up her territorial right of Taiwan but neither said that Taiwan belonged to Communist China nor any other nations. Therefore, it is totally up to the people of Taiwan to declare the independence of Taiwan.
Besides that, the Communist China’s military and economic expansionism escalating a threat among the nations in the North East Asia, the South East Asia and even in China-Sea and Southern Sea Areas.
Therefore, I think strong economic and military ties among the US, Japan and Taiwan are inevitable.

We really need to get rid of these idiots, anti-Japan Korean-Japanese who visited China,just to take snap-shot photos of shaking hands with Ho-Chin-Tao. They wasted a lot of Japanese tax money. A friendship with China? You've got to be kidding!
